Emergency HVAC Boise, Meridian & Treasure Valley Homeowners Call First
Do you live in Meridian and have an HVAC emergency?
Whether your AC isn’t working or you can’t understand why your heater isn’t performing, we are here to help.
Boise hit 96 degrees on May 12 this year, the earliest the city has ever recorded a temperature that high. A strong front knocked twenty degrees off it the next day. That swing is the Treasure Valley in a sentence, and it’s exactly the kind of week that takes out a tired system.
Top Shelf Heating & Cooling answers the phone around the clock, every day of the year. Furnace quit on the coldest night in January? AC died during a July heat advisory? We’ve been doing emergency HVAC for Boise and Meridian families for over a decade, and our line is staffed at 2am the same as 2pm.
When an HVAC Problem Becomes an Emergency
What should you do if you experience an air conditioner that isn’t working in July? On the other hand, if it is early May, should you call a company at 8:00 PM or wait until the next day? Not every HVAC emergency needs a midnight call. Some do, dpending on the severirty of your issue and the timing, here is when we recommedn calling right now for HVAC help vs waiting until the next day:
| CALL RIGHT NOW | CAN WAIT FOR MORNING |
|---|---|
| Your carbon monoxide alarm is sounding | The system is running but a little noisy |
| No heat with temperatures below freezing | One room is warmer than the rest |
| Burning or electrical smell from the system | A thermostat that needs reprogramming |
| No cooling during a heat advisory | A filter that’s overdue for a change |
| Someone elderly, very young, or medically fragile in the home | Slightly higher utility bill than last month |
| Water leaking from the furnace or air handler | A scheduled maintenance visit you forgot to book |
| The system trips the breaker every time it starts | An odor that clears after a few minutes |
Not sure which column you’re in? Call anyway. We’d rather talk you through it on the phone for free than have you sit up all night wondering. We share this information so you can save money if you have an issue that can wait until the next day. That said, when in doubt, call an HVAC professional here in Meridian!
Emergency Furnace and Heating Repair in Boise and Meridian

A furnace almost never fails in October. It fails on the first genuinely cold night, when it finally has to run hard, and that night is usually a weekend or a holiday.
Idaho winters leave no margin for error. When the heat goes out and outdoor temperatures sit below freezing, an unheated house drops fast, and so does the temperature inside your walls where the plumbing runs.
Heating emergencies we handle around the clock
- Furnace that won’t start or won’t stay running
- System blowing cold air with the heat called for
- Repeated short cycling that never warms the house
- Pilot light or ignition failure
- Blower motor failure
- A furnace tripping the breaker or the limit switch
- Loud banging, grinding, or screeching on startup
- Heat pump stuck in defrost or not switching over
Most of these are same-visit repairs. If the unit is past saving, we’ll say so plainly and talk through furnace replacement rather than selling you a repair that buys three weeks. For anything that can wait until business hours, our regular heater repair service handles it at standard rates.
If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, stop reading and get out
This one isn’t a judgment call. Get everyone and every pet outside into fresh air, then call 911 from outside. Do not go back in to open windows, check the furnace, or find the source.
Gas and oil furnaces are common household sources of carbon monoxide, and the CDC notes early symptoms look like the flu: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and confusion. People who are asleep can be overcome before any symptom registers.
Once the fire department clears the house, call us. We’ll inspect the heat exchanger, the venting, and the combustion air supply, and we won’t put the system back in service until it’s safe.
Why no heat turns into a plumbing bill
Once indoor temperatures fall far enough, pipes in exterior walls, crawlspaces, and unheated garages start freezing. A burst supply line costs far more than the furnace repair that would have prevented it.
If your heat is out and it’s genuinely cold, open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let a faucet drip while you wait for us. It buys time.
Emergency AC Repair When Idaho Summer Shows Up Early
Ninety-six degrees in May caught plenty of Treasure Valley homeowners with an AC that hadn’t run since September. A system that sat all winter and gets asked for full output on day one is a system that finds its weak point fast.
We run 24/7 emergency cooling the same as heating. For the full breakdown on AC failures, refrigerant leaks, and what to check before calling, our emergency cooling services page goes deeper on the cooling side.
What to Do Before We Arrive

You don’t have to take any actions unless there is an obvious sign that puts you and your family in danger. That said, a few recommendations before an HVAC technician arrives to see fi you can possibly troubleshoot your HVAC emergency yourself include:
Check the thermostat.
Confirm it’s set to heat or cool, the temperature is actually calling, and the batteries aren’t dead. This fixes more “emergencies” than anyone admits.
Check the breaker.
Find your HVAC breaker and see if it’s tripped. Reset it once. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and tell us, because that’s an electrical fault, not a nuisance trip.
Check the furnace switch.
A standard light switch near most furnaces can get flipped off by accident during cleaning or storage runs.
Look at the filter.
A completely clogged filter can shut a system down on a safety limit. If it’s grey and matted, swap it and see if that helps.
Clear a path for our technicians
Move boxes, bins, and anything stacked around your HVAC system/unit so our tech can work and inspect your problem quickly.
Then stop.
Don’t open panels, don’t tape anything, don’t try a repair you watched on video. Tell us what you found and let us take it from there.
How Our Emergency Response Works
When you call Top Shelf Heating & Cooling, a real person answers, not a voicemail or automated form. We’ll ask what’s going on with your system, walk you through a few quick checks, and help determine whether you need emergency service tonight or if the repair can wait until morning. If you need a technician, we’ll let you know who’s coming and when to expect them. Once on-site, we’ll diagnose the problem, explain your repair options, and discuss pricing before starting any work. Our goal is simple: get your heating or cooling system running again as quickly as possible. If we need to order a part, we’ll be upfront about the timeline and do what we can to keep your home comfortable in the meantime.
Common HVAC Emergencies We See in Boise & Meridian
After more than a decade of servicing heating and cooling systems across the Treasure Valley, we’ve seen just about everything that can go wrong with an HVAC system. Some problems start small and get worse over time. Others happen without warning, usually when Idaho weather is at its worst.
Here are six common HVAC emergencies our team can help with in Meridian, Boise, Nampa, and the surrounding communities.
1. Furnace Stops Working During Freezing Temperatures
When outdoor temperatures drop below freezing, a furnace that won’t turn on is more than an inconvenience. Common causes include failed ignitors, malfunctioning flame sensors, blower motor issues, and electrical problems. If your home is getting colder and the heat won’t come back on, it’s time to call.
2. AC Running but Not Cooling Your Home
It’s 100 degrees outside, your thermostat is set to 72, and your house keeps getting warmer. Sound familiar? This can happen because of failed capacitors, refrigerant leaks, frozen evaporator coils, or compressor problems. During a Treasure Valley heat wave, losing your AC can become an emergency quickly.
3. Burning Smells or Electrical Problems
A strong burning smell, repeated breaker trips, or unusual electrical noises coming from your HVAC system should never be ignored. These symptoms can indicate overheating components, damaged wiring, or failing motors. Turn the system off and contact a professional rather than repeatedly restarting it. If you notice smoke or signs of fire, evacuate and call 911.
4. HVAC System Leaking Water
Water pooling around your furnace, air handler, or indoor AC unit could mean a clogged condensate drain, damaged drain pan, frozen cooling coil, or another drainage issue. Left unchecked, these problems can damage flooring, drywall, and nearby equipment.
5. Heat Pump Not Heating or Cooling Properly
Heat pumps are becoming increasingly common throughout Boise and Meridian, but they can still experience problems during extreme temperatures. A malfunctioning reversing valve, defrost control issue, or electrical failure can leave your home without reliable heating or cooling when you need it most.
6. HVAC System Constantly Turning On and Off
If your furnace or AC starts, runs briefly, and shuts off repeatedly, something isn’t right. This is called short cycling, and it can be caused by airflow restrictions, overheating, thermostat problems, or failing components. Continued short cycling can put additional stress on your system and lead to more expensive repairs.

Frequently Asked Emergency HVAC Questions
1. Do you really answer the phone at 2am in Boise?
Yes. Our line is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year, holidays included. You get a person, and if the situation can safely wait until morning, we’ll tell you that rather than sending a truck you don’t need.
2. Is no heat an emergency in Idaho?
In winter, usually yes. Once Treasure Valley overnight temperatures drop below freezing, an unheated house gets cold enough to put your plumbing at risk, and that turns an HVAC repair into a plumbing repair. Households with infants, elderly residents, or anyone medically fragile should treat it as urgent regardless of the thermostat reading.
3. How fast can you get to my house?
It depends on the hour and how many calls are ahead of you, but we’re based in Meridian and most of Boise, Nampa, and Eagle is a short drive. We’ll give you a realistic window on the phone, not a number we can’t hit.
4. What does emergency service cost compared to a normal visit?
There’s a flat emergency visit fee on top of standard repair pricing, and you’ll hear it before we dispatch. If your problem can safely wait until regular hours, we’ll say so, because paying the after-hours rate for something that can wait until Monday doesn’t help anyone.
5. My carbon monoxide detector went off. What do I do?
Get everyone outside immediately, including pets, and call 911 from outside the house. Don’t go back in for any reason. Once the fire department has cleared the home, call us and we’ll inspect the furnace, heat exchanger, and venting before the system goes back in service.
6. Can you fix it tonight or will I need to wait for parts?
Most emergency calls get resolved on the first visit. Our trucks carry the parts that fail most often. If yours needs something we have to order, we’ll tell you right away, give you a realistic timeline, and help you keep the house safe and livable until it arrives.
